SMS Bulk tool
This is an interactive web based tool designed to send and receive SMS in bulk. The service was initiated in 2008 and so far there 1,200 registered users. This service has enhanced a wider target of users among the vulnerable group such as the Deaf, Sex Workers and Youth living with HIV. So far we have received 1001 and sent 18,686 SMS's.
The service has also been widely used by the Care Division in tracking clients-defaulters for ART (Anti-Retro viral Therapy).
Email question
Designed for users who have a series of questions and are comfortable to correspondence with counselors in writing they have an option to send their concerns to: - email account one2one@liverpoolvct.org Email are responded immediately or within 12hours of receiving them.
Chat function
The chat function is on the Home Page of the website. Click http://www.one2onekenya.org to start chatting with a counselor.
This function provides an innovative method of reaching the youth with instant, current, relevant and factual information on HIV AIDS and SRH.
Problem pages in the Insyder teen magazine
The programme reaches youth with SRH information through answering their questions and publishing them in the "teeniz" magazines Insyder and Sikika. Most concerns involve Relationship/Alcoholism, Self Esteem and HIV/ AIDS.
Support Groups
The programme runs six support groups, two in Nairobi and four in Nyanza provinces for young people living with HIV/AIDS aged between 15-25 years. The members access free care & treatment & nutritional supplements at LVCT's HIV comprehensive care clinic, Capacity building training sessions and psychosocial support. Currently, the groups have membership of 114 with 84 members accessing care and treatment in LVCT supported sites.
Youth Advisory Council
LVCT recognizes that young people are resourceful; hence empowers them to be important and respected members of the community and to actively contribute to HIV/AIDS discourse as a result of this, three Youth Advisory Council groups were formed in Embu, Kisumu and Nairobi in the year 2008. The Groups consist of 12 members each aged 10-24. The approach is aimed at creating an inclusive youth community in Kenya by facilitating active participation from young people in HIV /AIDS & SRH matters. The councils mainly focus in providing guidance and advising the programme on the implementation and development of all aspects of the youth programs. The YACS are located in Nairobi, Eastern and Nyanza.
Summary of YAC achievements
- Have marketed the one2one youth hotline and the SMS bulk tool to 15000 youths and about 800 youths registered for bulk SMS tool
- Over 6000 youths have been referred to HIV counselling and testing services.
- Increased uptake of HIV counselling and testing among the youth with more than 2000 youths agreeing to take test during YAC functions.
- Over 8000 youths sensitized on adverse effects of engaging in risky sexual behaviours, HIV AIDS information, sexual reproductive health and sexuality.
- Participated in community services, example; Embu town clean-up, Kibera slum clean up and Kowino Market Nyalenda clean up.
- Organised awareness outreaches in colleges where high populations of youths. Among the colleges so far reached are; Embu Government Training Institute, Nyalenda, Mathare, Kibera, Kayole, Embu college, Kenya Medical Training Centre , Rwika Technical Kenya Institute of Management Embu among others.
- Has graced major events; namely the national secondary schools ball games, Mathare youth association international tournaments among others and organized 2 youth football clubs in Kisumu.
- Participated in organised by the Vijana boost youth group and which was attended by the Japanese ambassador to Kenya on 26th of February
Youth Friendly VCT Sites (YFS) The YFS are located in four rural areas of Nyanza -Gesima, Ruma, Kadibo and Uranga. The centres are community based and youth led. The centres offer HIV/ CT services, appropriate referral services space for recreational activities, host outreach discussions and information dissemination on HIV/AIDS and SRH to the youth. During the period October 2006 to march 2009, 14677 youth have been counselled and tested among them 7695 being male and 6982 females.
Sema Radio Program (Sema nami)
Sema radio talk show is youth show that started 3 weeks ago and is aired on Ghetto Radio 89.5 FM every Saturday between 12 pm and 1 pm. The programme seek to increase awareness on reproductive health, sexuality, HIV/AIDS risks and reduction of infections among young questioning their sexual orientation or those that practice same sex relationships.
The radio program uses voixpop and SMS's that come in during the show to reach young people and support those in crisis, providing them with sources of credible and accurate information and referral for services.
